"My main focus is to produce lasting training results that ensure a dog listens
Our Training Philosophy
Our Whole Dog Training approach uses modern choice based training methods.
This is founded on instinctive canine understanding to seek favoritism or aim to please.
We refuse to use training methods that create food dependency, suppress a dogs motivation, or create fear.
They do not create long term training results and simply do not work!
We also understand the importance of customize a training curriculum to serve your family's individual needs.
Each dog's unique history, temperament, age, and genetics, along with owner experience play an important role in formulating each training curriculum.
Our History
Sixteen years ago, we realized something was missing from the classic ways of obedience training in our area. No one cared that their dog had learned to sit on command in a quiet, focused training lesson but returned to clobbering guest as they walked through the front door. Owners needed real life, practical application approach to training their over stimulated dog. As a result, we launched the idea of taking a Whole Dog approach to dog training with the goal of creating well-trained dogs that even first-time dog owners could manage.
And on this simple concept The Polished Pooch dog training school was founded. We originated in Germantown, TN and now proudly serve
Collierville, Arlington, Bartlett, Olive Branch, the greater Shelby County area and North Mississppi.
Owner, Meridith Caver Wilburn, had several prior successful careers but nothing that stole her heart like her childhood passion for animals.
As a child she idolized and absorbed every second spent with her father as he professionally trained working dogs. For over 30 years he trained, bred, judged, and trialed retrievers winning multiple champion titles. Passing on his gentle nature and love for training, Meridith was molded into an exceptional handler.
From a young age she was fascinated with canine behavior and their instinctive learning.
Throughout high school and college, Meridith worked with local animal shelters as a technician and medical assistant and assisted animal control officers.
To further her small animal education she began working as a kennel assistant at Forest Hill Animal Hospital. During her ten years here, she was promoted to kennel manager then continued her education by becoming a certified veterinary technician and became their lead surgical technician. Throughout the years she was routinely requested by the practices doctors to help owner’s solve behavior problems with unruly dogs. Because of her training skills, she was encouraged her to follow her childhood passion and began training full time. Her dream grew quickly as more and more local veterinarians began referring clients to her training servings.
Now owning and opperating her own training facility she has been serving clients across the Memphis area ever since.
The Polished Pooch takes great pride in being one of the only veterinary recommended dog training programs.
